Yuval Harari, writer of the celebrated book “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind”, says “When a thousand people believe some made-up story for a month, that is fake news”.
“When a billion people believe it for a thousand years, that is a religion, and we are admonished not to call it fake news in order not to hurt the feelings of the faithful.”
I disagree with the writer although what he wrote may be true.
It doesn’t matter whether a religion is true or based on falsehoods.
What’s important is that a religion, even one based on alleged falsehoods, serves several purposes.
It’s surely true that religion is the cheapest form of psychological counselling and psychiatric care.
Having said that, religion is also about creating certainties in the comfort zone for the gross body differentiated in time and space.
The gross body is not us. It’s something that we inherited and gathered from the energy of the sun through Mother Nature on Earth.
It returns to Mother Nature. Just as a robot with AI can be switched off, the biochemical robot – the gross body — can be switched off.
The brains turns to dust.
Emotions cease to exist.
The mind housed in the brain is no more.
Consciousness which gathered in the gross body lingers like a ghost, an apparition, for a time and eventually dissipates into the great nothingness which is God, for want of a better term.
According to science, consciousness was created by an ancient virus, the mind sees it as “a beautiful illusion created by the brain”.
It’s religion that keeps the poor from murdering the rich.
All religions are convenient man-made vehicles for organisation, control and exploitation of people.
We can’t strip people of religion and leave them with nothing.
Having said that, Muslims should not compare Islam with other religions and/or non-religions and rubbish the latter.
The rule of law is the basis of the Constitution.
The media should stick to the ethics of the profession.
Since Christians, for example, don’t call themselves Indian Christians but only Indians, likewise Muslims in India should call themselves Indians, not Indian Muslims.
Also, Muslims in India should subscribe to nationalism, not the global ummah.
Before anyone talks about Islam in Malaysia, visit the country. The media has created a lot of hype on Islam in Malaysia.
No politician in Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo can mention Islam and get away with it.
Two political parties in Malaya, Umno and PAS, tend to harp on Islam for Muslim votes. The non-Muslims know that.
